چکیده
Spatial characterization of the variability of soil physico-chemical properties is a fundamental element of (i) soil quality assessment, (ii) modeling non-point source pollutants in soil, and (iii) sitespecific crop management. Apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) is a quick, reliable measurement that is frequently used for the spatio-temporal characterization of edaphic (e.g., salinity, water content, texture, and bulk density) and anthropogenic (e.g., leaching fraction) properties. It is the objective of this paper to provide the protocols for conducting a field-scale ECa survey (Part I) and apply these protocols to a soil quality assessment in central California’s San Joaquin Valley (Part II). The protocols are comprised of eight general steps: (i) site description and ECa survey design; (ii) ECa data collection with mobile GPS-based equipment; (iii) soil sampling design; (iv) soil core sampling; (v) laboratory analysis; (vi) calibration of ECa to ECe; (vii) spatial statistical analysis; (viii) GIS database development and graphic display. Comparison of Sampling Strategies for Characterizing Spatial Variability with Apparent Soil Electrical Conductivity Directed Soil Sampling
Spatial variability has a profound influence on a variety of landscape-scale agricultural issues including solute transport in the vadose zone, soil quality assessment, and site-specific crop management. Directed soil sampling based on geospatial measurements of apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) is a potential means of characterizing the spatial variability of any soil property that i...
متن کاملQuantitative Evaluation and Uncertainty Assessment on Geostatistical Simulation of Soil Salinity Using Electromagnetic Induction Technique
Diagnosis of soil salinity and characterizing its spatial variability both vertically and horizontally are needed to establish control measures in irrigated agriculture. In this regard, it is essential that salinity development in varying soil depths be known temporally and spatially. Apparent soil electrical conductivity, measured by electromagnetic induction instruments, has been widely used ...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Patterns of Apparent Electrical Conductivity: DUALEM vs. Veris Sensors for Monitoring Soil Properties
The main objective of this study was to compare two apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) sensors (Veris 2000 XA and DUALEM 1S) for mapping variability of soil properties in a Mediterranean shallow soil. This study also aims at studying the effect of soil cover vegetation on the ECa measurement by the two types of sensors. The study was based on two surveys carried out under two very diff...
متن کاملSpatial Characteristics of Claypan Soil Properties in an Agricultural Field
Spatial variability in soil properties has long been observed within uniformly managed fields. Understanding the spatial characteristics of soil properties would be helpful in understanding soil–landscape relationships and in the development of site-specific management. The primary objective of this research was to quantify the spatial characteristics of claypan soil properties for a 4-ha agric...

The apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) was continuously recorded in three successive dates using electromagnetic induction in horizontal (ECa-H) and vertical (ECa-V) dipole modes at a 6 ha plot located in Northwestern Spain. One of the ECa data sets was used to devise an optimized sampling scheme consisting of 40 points. Soil was sampled at the 0.0-0.3 m depth, in these 40 points, and ...
